People are getting dumber and as they do their taste degenerates. Also, I think you meant "for naught."

I feel like this same thing is happening with "viral" moments in TV shows, a la, whatever the dumb scene was in Stranger Things that featured the Kate Bush song. I feel like writers now are like, "What song can we insert (or thing can we do) here that will make this viral" rather than organically creating something that simply fits the world of the show.

I find myself increasingly consuming/rewatching media that was produced before 2016 or so. My wife introduced me to Mad Men last year, and now we're on to watching The Wire, with the 2003 Battlestar Galactica slated to follow. I just can't get excited about shows like The Last of Us – indeed, the more they're hyped as groundbreaking or important, the more sure I become that I will never, ever watch them.

I've had the same experience with books, too. I just finished reading – and loving – The Library at Mount Char, a book I vaguely thought was published in the past couple years, and when I checked the copyright page after I was done, it said: 2015.

I love this episode. I always think of that rare moment when Don shows his cards as they're preparing the pitch, telling Ken, "The timber of my voice is as important as the content. I don't know if I'll be forceful or submissive..." Hamm was hilarious.
